In a recent interview with NME, Flume, whose real name is Harley Streten, questioned why he gets lumped in under the EDM umbrella.
“I’ve never really seen myself as an EDM act, but in the States, I get asked, ‘Where do you see yourself in the EDM scene?'” the 25-year-old producer said. “I don’t know what to say. I don’t really even know what it is – like, ‘electronic dance music?’ Am I a dance act? None of my sh-t’s at that BPM or anywhere around it. None of it’s got a 4/4 house beat. I never think of it as house or dance music.”
That’s a fair enough point, which makes us wonder if the “EDM” name is actually a good label for what it describes. There are plenty of artists who are considered to be part of the EDM genre but who aren’t necessarily dance acts.
Flume’s also been distancing himself from “typical EDM” through his stage image. “Look at Ultra Music Festival and look at the main stage,” he said. “It looks f—ing terrible. It’s not done nice. Everything’s just on the whole time.”Read more to listen to one of Flume’s biggest hits:
