Watch: Major Lazer Releases Video for ‘Believer,’ Inspired by Tragic Photo of Syrian Boy

The upsetting image of a five-year-old boy coated in ash, caked in blood and utterly haunted-looking took over the internet in a matter of hours. Pulled from Aleppo during a rescue mission, Omran Daqneesh quickly became a symbol of the heartache happening in the Middle East. For Diplo and the rest of Major Lazer, this photo fueled them to create their new music video, “Believer.”

The image of Omran Daqneesh inspired “Believer.”

Major Lazer and Showtek teamed up with director Christopher Louie the try to use the photo of Omran as an inspiration for the video “Believer.” Though the photo is horribly sad, they wanted to find a way to look for the positive.

“Like everyone in the world I was heartbroken by that image, but I also saw a glimmer of hope,” Louie said. “As dark as the subject matter is, the point of our ‘Believer’ video was to capture the resilience of youth and the hope displayed by communities coming together to save victims from the rubble.”
