Steve Aoki Trades in EDM for Hip-Hop

Never one to conform, Steve Aoki is trying his hand at something new. But is he abandoning EDM along the way?

Are you leaving us, Steve?

It doesn’t sound like it will be goodbye to EDM forever. But Steve Aoki’s newest (in progress) EP is going to be much more hip-hop focused.

“I’m creating a whole new brand,” he said in an interview with Fuse. “And I might be creating a whole new stage show around this brand.”

The EP, due out later this year, will help introduce this new brand. He also said the new works would be more collaborative, adding in hip-hop artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Migos and 2 Chains.

As far as the recording process went, it sounds like a heck of a lot of fun. Basically, Steve Aoki set up shop and had people drop by whenever, creating things on the fly.

“People were just rolling through,” he said. “You can’t manufacture [that kind of sound]; you just have to roll with it right then and there.”
